Third Lake Ridge House

Project Overview

At House Architect, we guide our clients through every stage of the architectural process, ensuring a seamless journey from initial concept to project completion and beyond. Our work on the Third Lake Ridge House, a complete interior remodel and exterior renovation of a 1920s home, exemplifies this approach. The project involved transforming the historic structure into a modern, multi-generational home while preserving its architectural integrity.

Converting a single family home to two separate kitchen, bath & living spaces spread over three floors

Initial Consultation

Our relationship with the clients began before they even purchased this house for their home. They sought a home suitable for an extended family living arrangement, requiring two modernized living spaces with shared access. We helped evaluate potential homes, ultimately selecting this historic house for its charm and adaptive potential.

Pre-design & Schematic Design

After selecting the ideal house, we developed conceptual designs, focusing on balancing modern family living needs with the home’s historic character. Key considerations included functional layouts, natural light, and maintaining architectural harmony with the surrounding historic district.

Design Development

With a defined design concept, we refined details such as room layouts, materials, and interior finishes. The project’s unique dual-living arrangement required careful space planning to ensure privacy and accessibility. The ground level included a shared guest suite and family common area, while the main and upper floors became independent living spaces.

We collaborated closely with the Madison Landmarks Commission to align the design with historic preservation guidelines. This process involved detailed reviews and presentations, ensuring that modern updates would be sensitive to the home’s original character.

Estimation

We worked with partnered contractors to provide cost estimates early in the process, helping the client understand the project’s financial scope. This allowed for informed decisions about design priorities and value-engineering options.

Construction Documents, Permitting & Approvals

Detailed construction documents were prepared, including architectural drawings, specifications, and technical details. We managed the permitting process, working directly with city officials and securing Landmarks Commission approval.

Construction Administration

During construction, House Architect provided on-site coordination and regular project reviews. We addressed unforeseen challenges inherent in renovating a historic home, ensuring that design intent was maintained through every construction phase.

Project Completion and Closeout

As construction neared completion, a final walkthrough was scheduled to ensure everything was built to the client’s satisfaction. Any issues were addressed and noted to be corrected before the client’s moved in for occupancy.

Post-Construction Support

The relationship didn’t end at project completion. The clients later engaged us to design a two-car garage and motor court, again requiring Landmarks Commission approval. This second project reflected the same care and attention to historic compatibility as the original house remodel.

Result

Third Lake Ridge House now stands as a thoughtfully updated historic home with a modern interior that respects its architectural heritage. Its extended family can enjoy private living spaces while sharing common areas, all within a home beautifully adapted for today’s needs.
